A young poet, Kim, Min-Sik who has limited life. He writes poems without frustration although he is dying today. He writes in a small room of the house which was located at the part of Mt. Chilgab in Chungcheong province.
He has written poems for several years fighting a desperate sickness which is called muscular dystrophy. He can not move his fingers freely. He can not have enough energy to push keyboard although the computer is working.
He doesn't know how long he can write poems although he wants to write them forever. He just wish to die keeping nature of Mt. Chilgab which birds fly and rabbits and roe deers run in mind.
[World is shining as great Sun rises in a new year/I sit on floor to receive sunbeam asking my father to move me there//I open my eyes to see front mountain for a long time//The fine trees are especially green/I want to stand beside the trees]
(poem written by Kim, Min-Sik, new year's morning. It shows his strong wish to embrace nature)
He is just 18 years old. One has to have every hope for his life whatever he sees in that age. Friends about his age are the third-year students in high school who have to prepare two lunch boxes in their heavy bags and study until night to go to university.
Even though the study is very difficult for them, it is the happiest time as they have dreams that they can reach. However, Min-Sik can not go to school because he can not move his body at all.
Min-Sik was a very healthy boy at first like the other boys. He went to his elementary school by walking 7 km and came back home by walking on the same road. Who knew Min-Sik had that kind of unhappiness? When Min-Sik was the fourth-year student in the elementary school, a truck hit him on his way to home after he received new books.
Although a surprised grandmother went to a hospital to see a doctor with Min-Sik, the doctor said that hitting by the truck made just a slight injury and Min-Sik should be sent to a big hospital as quickly as possible in order for him to be examined carefully.
Although Min-Sik's grandmother went to the other hospital with doubtful mind, his family just got dubious reply. So surprised family went to severance hospital of Yonsei university having the mind to catch at straw.
The doctors always said that his disease was muscular dystrophy whose name was not familiar. The disease usually starts at 4 years old and it gets rid of a person's muscle gradually so the person who gets this appalling disease dies within 20 years old. There is no cure for this disease in the all over the world. Min-Sik's disease is even worst one.
"I could not do anything at first after hearing that. I struggled to escape from the thought why I had to die due to horrible disease." However, he smiles happily saying that he can maintain peaceful mind now because he has many friends to love him and can write poems that he likes. He talked in quiet tones about his mind and life with a superior air.
His misfortunes never came singly. Min-Sik's mother suffered from cancer of the womb and had an operation. Fortunately the operation was successful she goes to the hospital regularly. The worse thing was that Min-Sik's family could not maintain their livelihood as the farm tenanted by Min-Sik's father was expropriated to build a new road.
Min-Sik is just 18 years old. Two years is left for Min-Sik to live if he can not live over 20 as a doctor says. However, he worries about his grandmother who has taken care of him imposingly.
Min-Sik can not sit and lie down by himself. He can not move just single step with his abilities. He has to use his all of energy because he doesn't have enough power to type a keyboard of a computer. So the computer gets out of order easily because he can't touch the keyboard correctly. Although he wants to start the computer, he can not control his body freely. If somebody doesn't help him, he can not do anything whatever he wants.
Sweat showed down his body if he tries to move his body just a little bit because it is very difficult for him to do that. It is the same as he eats some food. He eats meal after he rests his one arm on a small dining table and supports the arm which holds a spoon with the other arm after he tries it several times. It is like difficult acrobatics although he uses the lightest plastic spoon. He swings his arm several times to get reaction in order for him to put his spoon into his mouth.
He flies freely toward the outside world through his poems overcoming all difficulties and restraint that his body has.
[Sometimes like wind, sometimes like wave, can we be free? / Sometimes like the sun sometimes like the bright moon can we have warm heart?// Sometimes like rose sometimes like a wildflower can we love our neighbor?/ Sometimes like an ant sometimes like a locust can we live doing our best?] (poem written by Kim, Min-Sik, 'Sometimes like a wildflower)
The grandmother who is over seventy takes care of Min-Sik giving food to him and dealing with his urine and feces. Although she said there was no disease not to be cured nowadays, she abode by the inevitable and she just feels pity for her grandson's fate saying that she can not die leaving him who can not move at all.
The grandmother was not well as much as she could barely move so elder brother of Min-Sik's father who lived in Seoul took her to Seoul in order for him to take care of her.
Min-Sik became generally known to outside world just 4 years before.
His poems and story sent to a religious magazine was published in the magazine by accident and it served as a momentum. After that, House of Hope in Gongju which serves the disable's welfare knew Min-Sik's story and the letter that encouraged him started to be sent from all the country. However, Min-Sik's story became generally known after his story was reported in a magazine X of Kyunghyang newspaper.
Many letters encouraged him started to be sent and someone sent some money for him to buy pencils and school supplies. He was introduced a lot through the programs of many broadcasting stations such as KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS, local broadcasting company, and newspapers. The documentary program of Incheon broadcasting station, 'Saengmyungjeonsun' introduced him.
Monthly magazine, 'Lady Kyunghyang' and 'Queen' reported his story, too. A subscriber presented a computer for him who held barely a pencil. The person brought the computer using a car by oneself to the part of Mt. Chilgab and encouraged him to write poems whenever and whatever he wanted to write beautiful thought expressed in a poem.
However, nowadays he doesn't have enough energy to type keyboard of the computer. He can't move his fingers according to his mind. It is very sorry for him.
Someone sent a Chinese medicine and someone visited him with a medicinal water by oneself after they heard his sad story. A person came to his house with mountain ginseng and white snake that he had kept for several decades. A person who lived abroad sent mountain ginseng. They are very benevolent.
His wish to publish poems came true. Galam publishing company published his poems as a collection of poems. Min-Sik's book titled as 'Life is beautiful and happy as much as one lives' was sold one thousand copies during 4 months from the first publication and the publishing company printed it another two thousand copies, again.
Sim, Jae-Seok, a film director decided to make Min-Sik's story documentary movie and asked Lee, Mi-Hye, a screenwriter to write a script for the story. A draft of the movie was already finished. Sim, Jae-Seok will start shooting the film as soon as he gets a sponsor who will support cost of production.
Min-Sik published his second collection of poems recently. A publishing company(Doorae media) decided to use all profit that it will get from selling of the book for Min-Sik. His second book is titled as "Be happy and beautiful until one dies" as if he knows he will die soon.
[If I can live happily and beautifully until I die, I don't want many things/ The reason is that I have mind to sing a world//If I can live happily and beautifully until I die, I don't want many things/The reason is that I have eyes to see a world beautifully//If I can live happily and beautifully until I die, I don't have many things.
/ The reason is that I have hope to overcome my misfortune although my life is limited // If I can live happily and beautifully until I die, I don't want to wish many things / The reason is that even if my life is finished here, I am doing my best for my life.] (poem written by Kim, Min-Sik, "Be happy and beautiful until one dies")
The poems of Min-Sik that sings beautiful life with transparent language like sunbeam makes people who feel bored in our life to find out noble meaning of life again. Min-Sik wants to give his books to all of people who helps him.
The genius poet, Min-Sik. He has lived with bright smile although he confronts his death in the world that normal person can not live without difficulties. Min-Sik who has strong and pure spirit gives energy and courage to people. Middle and high school students throughout all over the country has sent a thousands of letters.
Students in middle school for girls in Mokpo sent letters as a group after a teacher of the school read the report of Min-Sik's story. Although most of the letters is to encourage him, some of them are to say gratitude as they get great spiritual energy to live after they hear his story.
People who live abroad as well as live in Jeju send letters to say that they are proud of Min-Sik and they hope him not to lose courage for his life.
[Hello, I read Min-Sik's story in a magazine accidently.
Here is Toronto in Canada. It is far away from Korea. I have lived here for 23 years with my four children. My name is Kim, Mun-Hee and I always have a hectic day to take of my children.
I sang a song of Mt. Chilgab that I liked the words of the song several times and I knew there was a real Mt. Chilgab through your story. I would like to see Mt. Chilgab and meet you, Min-Sik. I feel ashamed of living with dissatisfaction and vexation every da as much as I can't raise my face.
I would like to encourage Min-Sik. "Life is beautiful and happy as much as one lives" is great words. When you feel difficulties and vexation, please pray for help.
God will give power and comfort to overcome your agonies.
Though I am not a devotional person, I try to be a sincere Christian. Mt. Chilgab which Min-Sik lives. How beautiful and clean it is! If I can visit Korea again, I would like to go to Mt. Chilgab. Reply? I don't expect to receive a reply letter from you]
(In the contents of the letter that Kim, Mun-Hee in Toronto sent to Min-Sik)
Prisoners sent letters to Min-Sik. They wanted to express their gratitude to him that awakened them to a value of life promising they would live orderly in the rest of life through letters.
Min-Sik who gives encourage and energy to the people who have healthy body is certainly salt and a lamp that lightens darkness in our society. He would like to send reply letters to people who sent letters from all over the country, but he just keeps that hope in mind. It is very difficult for him to type a keyboard of a computer. Many letters sent aren't almost sent anymore as he didn't send reply letters.
Min-Sik writes poems instead of reply letters to express his gratitude to people who send letters. He puts the words that he wants to carry in his poems after he compresses it again and again. People find out keenly that if they can only walk and move although they don't have anything, that is happy and benediction itself as they know Min-Sik's story.
Tears showered down my cheeks as I appreciate my living life. There is valuable enlightenment that small happiness is beautiful. That which changes and leads the world doesn't depend on a great and powerful person. Though it is a very tiny and small thing individually, aggregation of the small power has made the society bright.
Helping and reliance on each other is the same as that. So there is a sentence that fellow sufferers have mutual sympathy. Only the person who experienced hardships knows what the difficulties are. People who are grown without hunger due to their parents's wealth never know the bitterness of people who tries to escape desperately from agonies and an abyss of despair that give difficulties and pain.
The darker night is, the brighter star is and the deeper despair is, the stronger will that overcomes the despair is. Therefore, human being is beautiful and lofty.
They know if they remove the veil of pain today, they can see bright sun tomorrow so they do their best to live today with hope. Let¡®s not give up our life or be disturbed by bitterness of life even if it takes long until the day that we can smile comes.
Most of people who send letters to encourage Min-Sik have hardships and difficulties in their life. They are poor, but they are willing to share the other's pain together with warm heart. Their life is probably rich in terms of spiritual wealth that is shining brightly.
Even if it is just one day, Min-Sik has to live like a month or a year of the other's
so he doesn't have any day or any moment to waste. So he writes poems desperately in order for him to put everything of this world in his mind at this moment.
People wish Min-Sik to live more. Though his mind is in a rush, he can't type a keyboard of a computer as quickly as he wants. It is sad that he is likely not to write poems anymore as the power of his hands has been disappeared more and more.
Min-Sik is reduced to skin and bones. Family who takes care of him doesn't have tears to cry anymore. He can not put cookies and beverages that family gives into his mouth. He has a weaker grip than that of 2 or 3 years baby. It is very difficult for him to just lie down, but he will do his best to live without frustration or giving up his life until he dies. We just wish a young poet, Kim, Min-Sik who has limited life and sings beautiful life with all his might a speedy recovery by a miracle.
